A website can look polished, load acceptably on your own device and still be quietly limiting its search visibility. That is why a guide to technical SEO audits should start with the mechanics beneath the page: whether search engines can discover, understand, render and index the work you have invested in. For growing businesses, the aim is not a longer spreadsheet of warnings. It is a clearer route to more qualified visibility.

What a technical SEO audit is designed to find

Technical SEO is the structure that supports every other search activity. It covers the way a site is crawled, the pages that are indexed, how quickly content becomes usable, and whether the code, links and page signals make sense to search engines.

An audit identifies faults, but its commercial value comes from prioritisation. A missing meta description is rarely as urgent as a page blocked from indexing. A handful of redirected URLs may be perfectly normal after a website rebuild; hundreds of redirect chains can waste crawl resources, slow the customer journey and dilute a site’s internal structure.

For a service business, the key question is practical: are your best pages accessible and credible when someone searches for what you do? A strong audit connects technical findings to that question rather than treating SEO as a generic checklist.

Start with goals, data and a clean baseline

Before crawling the site, define what success should look like. This might be more organic enquiries for a core service, stronger visibility across Greater Manchester, or a cleaner migration from an old website to a new one. The goal determines which pages deserve the closest attention.

Review the site’s analytics and search performance data alongside a full crawl. Look for sudden falls in impressions, pages receiving traffic but no enquiries, and high-value landing pages with poor engagement. Data does not explain every issue on its own, but it tells you where to investigate first.

Then establish a baseline. Record organic traffic, indexed page counts, conversion actions, page speed data and rankings for priority searches. Crawl the website as a search engine would

Pay close attention to orphan pages. These are live pages with no internal links pointing to them. Search engines may still find them through a sitemap or historic links, but they receive little structural support from the rest of the site. Check crawl control and indexation

Crawling and indexation are related but different. A search engine can crawl a page without adding it to its index, and it can retain an indexed URL long after the page has stopped serving a useful purpose.

Review the robots.txt file, XML sitemap and page-level robots directives together. The sitemap should contain the preferred, indexable URLs you want to appear in search, not redirects, error pages, non-canonical duplicates or outdated test pages. Canonical tags deserve the same level of care. They signal the preferred version of a page when similar URLs exist, such as variations created by filters, tracking parameters or duplicated service pages. Incorrect canonicals can point search engines away from the very page you want to rank.

Also inspect status codes. A live, valuable page should generally return a 200 status. A page permanently replaced by a relevant equivalent should use a 301 redirect. A genuine removal may warrant a 404 or 410 response. Redirecting every deleted URL to the homepage is usually a poor substitute for a considered migration plan because it gives users and search engines little relevance.

Audit site architecture and internal linking

Site architecture affects discoverability, but it also shapes decision-making. A founder looking for web design should not have to navigate through three vague category pages before finding the relevant service. Clear paths support users and make the hierarchy of your expertise easier to interpret.

Keep priority pages close to the homepage and link to them contextually from related content. Internal links should use descriptive, natural anchor text rather than repetitive keyword-heavy phrases. The objective is clarity: show how your services, locations, case studies and supporting resources relate to one another.

Watch for pagination, faceted navigation and search-result pages if the site has a large catalogue or knowledge area. These can create many near-duplicate URLs. There is no single fix. Some filters may deserve indexing because they match genuine demand; others should remain outside the index to protect crawl focus and avoid thin pages.

Assess speed, rendering and mobile usability

Speed is not simply a score to chase. It affects the moment a visitor decides whether a site feels credible, particularly on mobile connections. Large images, unnecessary scripts, unoptimised fonts and third-party tracking tools are frequent causes of avoidable delay.

Assess the experience using real-world field data where available, then investigate individual templates. A homepage may be fast while a portfolio, service or contact page struggles because it loads extra media, maps or form scripts. Review the main performance signals: loading of the largest visible element, responsiveness to interaction and visual stability as content loads.

Design quality and speed are not competing priorities. They need deliberate collaboration. A full-bleed video can make sense for a high-impact campaign page, but it may be inappropriate on a conversion-focused local service page. Compress and correctly size imagery, defer non-essential code, reserve space for dynamic elements and remove scripts that do not contribute measurable value.

Mobile usability should be reviewed by using the site, not just by viewing a responsive preview. Check tap targets, form fields, navigation behaviour, sticky elements and content hidden behind overlays. If users cannot act easily on a phone, technical compliance alone will not produce better results.

Review on-page technical signals

Technical audits overlap with on-page SEO at the point where page signals influence understanding. Each indexable page needs a distinct title tag, a logical heading structure and content that states its purpose plainly. Duplicate titles across key pages can make similar services compete with one another or make search results less compelling.

Check structured data where it genuinely represents the page. Organisation, local business, service, product, review and FAQ markup can help search engines interpret valid information. However, markup should match visible content and should never be added merely to pursue an enhanced result. Incorrect or misleading schema creates risk without adding value.

Images need descriptive alt text where the image conveys meaning. Decorative visuals do not need forced descriptions. Re-crawl the site, inspect priority pages and monitor search data after changes go live. Technical SEO is not a one-off repair job. New pages, integrations and design updates can introduce fresh friction.

The best audit creates a more considered website: one that looks distinctive, works cleanly and gives search engines a precise understanding of where your business adds value. Fix the foundations with intent, and every future content, design and marketing investment has a stronger place to perform.
